what do you want to become when you grow up ?

On Saturday 8th July, 20 TCS Volunteers from different Kolkata projects visited a non-formal school run by our Tata Engage NGO partner – Turnstone Global.

The school has 200+ kids from the Basanti colony slum who attend for regular classes as well as dance and drawing classes.

The team conducted an essay writing competition and a poetry recitation competition for the kids.

The topic for the essay was “what do you want to become when you grow up”. Prizes were given to the top ten essays- we gave out umbrellas, coffee mugs and Bengali story books as prizes. The kids were super happy!!

There were some really good essays – the first prize went to a girl who is passionate about art and wants to be a drawing teacher for small kids. Other prize winning entries were aspirations to be a air force pilot, an IPS officer, a teacher, a doctor serving in villages, a veterinarian etc.

The poetry contest was keenly contested, and there were 5 students who were rewarded!

The team also enjoyed playing antakshari with the children, and speaking to the staff/teachers and the founder of the NGO DrKanchanGaba.

The event ended with a distribution of stationary and food packets to all the kids, staff members and volunteers who attended.

Special thanks to Gursimran Grewal, Jhelam Sen and SkAltafuddin for organising and coordinating the event.
