Story of Change

Poverty is one of the toughest barriers in the path of school education. In the course of imparting non formal education through our slum school at Basanti colony, Ultadanda (behind 4 No platform) today we are going to introduce our two students who fought their own battle of poverty with a conviction that tomorrow may come to them as the brightest day of their today’s life and finally they became the spectator of that bright day now.

Ananya Roy, the elder daughter of Ashim and Rekha Roy. Ananya’s father is a hawker at various local trains in Kolkata to Shantipur & Lalgola and her mother is working as maid at multiple households at Bidhannagar. She secured 70% marks in the Final exam of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education 2019. She had been dropped out from her school in 2015 due to her family’s financial crunch and she joined hand with her mother to work as maid. After the active intervention of the volunteers of Turnstone Global she joined our non formal  school at Basanti colony Slum as a student and after repeated follow up with the school authorities we were able to mainstream her by admitting at a local Government school near Ultodanga . Within very small sphere of years she learnt dance, drama and drawing at our school as few extra curriculum activities. She participated in various dance programs organised by various cultural wings across Kolkata. We wish her every success in her life.

Paromita Sarkar, the third daughter of Mrs Mousumi and Mr Dipak Sarkar. Her father Mr Dipak is working under a building contractor, and mother working as a maid nearby buildings of Paikpara. In her childhood she was at canning near sunderban area. Her family lost all their savings during the Aila storm in 2009 and migrated to kolkata in search of livelihood. Having found her at Basanti colony slum we found her family whom we have supported by providing the basic requirements for their daily living at that time. Gradually her father took a job under a building contractor. As days passed on Paromita started sharing her hands with her mother’s household work having dropped out from her local school. Again through our intervention she started schooling at our non formal  school in the year 2016. She had been admitted Ultodanga Government Sponsored School in class 8 through our liaison with school authorities. Before secondary board exam she was suffering with chronic tonsillitis and underwent tonsillectomy surgery in January 2019. Till she secured 68% marks in West Bengal secondary board exam 2019. Apart from her school education Paromita is good in painting. She dream to be a painter one day. Hope she will able to fill her life with lots of vibrant colors.
