Menstruation – they don’t need to be a pain

Menstrual Heath always remained neglected part among various social issues  in India .But after the release of Akshay Kumar and  Shonam  Kapoor starrer picture ‘Padman’ the concerns regarding the menstrual  health has came into a lime light in India.

In India, a majority of young girls of reproductive age group are at risk for reproductive tract infections because of their poor menstrual  health practices comprises of 30–50% of prenatal infection. It is so prevalent in India that some women do not eat or take showers during their menstruation period.

Though menstruation is a healthy biological process, it is always approached with hesitance because of cultural taboos.

Due to lack of affordable hygienic products which could be used during menstruation unhygienic alternatives like dry leaves, sands , cloths are used by the women of villages and rural culture in India which give the rise  the incidence of cervical cancer and other various reproductive tract infection among the Indian female of reproductive age group.

Young girls and women often remain absent in work place as they usually don’t have access to proper toilets with the facilities of sanitary pad disposable units.

These taboos on Menstruation also become a great barrier in attending schools by the girls due to fear of leaking, shame or embarrassment, period pain or inadequate sanitation facilities that do not allow them to wash or change in privacy and it has been always evident that schoolgirls from low-income families simply cannot afford the disposable sanitary product which is a constant monthly expenses.

Turnstone Global always takes a step ahead to facilitate the solution of all such dreaded social issues and to fight back with all taboos related to menstruation  on 10/03/13 all the benevolent volunteers from TCS took an initiative in collaboration with Turnstone Global to organise a menstrual health awareness camp by reputed gynaecologist Dr Pallab kanti  followed by the  distribution of  multiple packs of good quality sanitary pads among the young girls and women of Basanti Colony slum .There were more than 300 participants attended the camp and as a follow up feedback from the young female adults we are delighted to announce that many of them already took oath to change their habits of low cost sanitary pads instead of dirty cloths.
