Knowledge and awareness for diabetes in India

In India awareness and knowledge about diabetes is very poor particularly in rural areas. Hence the awareness generation is much more important among the rural inhabitants as well as urban people to fight back with the curse of diabetes maiiltus including its various forms and complications. Throughout the year we from Turnstone Global are conducting multiple health camps emphasizing on diabetes screening which comprises of blood sugar monitoring and eye check up to rule out the diabetic changes. Yesterday in association with Nabadoot Sangha of 42/9/7 Sashibhusan garden lane, kolkata-36 we organized and diabetes screening camp.332 people reached to us through this camp.

4.6 million deaths have been reported worldwide due to the complication of diabetes mellitus and its various forms. Around 366 million people globally are currently estimated to have diabetes according to the international diabetes federation and out of which 80% population are living in low and middle income countries across the world. Half of that 80 percent people are suffering with diabetes which has been undiagnosed. As per the icmr-indiab study in 2011 India has a burden of 62.4 million diabetic and this numbers are expected o rise 101.2 million by 2030 .according to wild et al it has been predicted globally that the prevalence of diabetes will be 366 million in 2030 with 79.4 million individuals in India only .

The cause of diabetes in India is multifactorial which includes genetic factors associated with environmental factors such as obesity associated with rising living standards, lifestyle changes and a steady urban migration.

In comparison of rural India the Indian urban population has better access to various reliable screening methods and anti-diabetic-medications but unfortunately such health benefits are not often available to the rural population of India and the major deficit is the disproportionate allocation of health resources between urban and rural areas. In rural area poverty cause food insecurity, illiteracy, poor sanitation, and dominance of communicable diseases which all contribute the cause of diabetes mellitus .there are a lot of challenges in the field of diabetes care in India. While hba1c is the gold standard test around the world for insulin initiation and intensification. In both the clinical and patient communities there is a lack of “clinical inertia” in the commencement of insulin therapy. the most common fear regarding insulin initiation therapy are related to the complexities of the insulin regimen and concerns about gaining weight , hypoglycemic events, and fear of insulin needle prick.

Appropriate government interventions and combined efforts from all the stakeholders of our society like Turnstone Global are required to reduce the disease burden that diabetes creates in India.
