International Day of Yoga: 21 June

Yoga has been around from the pre Vedic age and is considered to be present from the time of Indus Valley Civilization (3300 BCE) and was created to cater to the material and spiritual uplift of humanity. It is present in many religious texts like that of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. It was widely accepted by the world from the 20th Century.

The idea of an International Day of Yoga was the first proposed by the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi during his speech at the UNGA, on 27 September 2014 and on the 11th of December, 2014, it was adopted by the UNGA. In Suggesting June 21, which is the Summer Solstice, Mr. Modi had said that, “the date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world.”

What is Yoga?

Many believe that is just a form of exercise, or meditation. But the horizon of Yoga encompasses much more. “It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness.” Creating consciousness and sense of oneness- that is what yoga bestows under its tutelage. This means that understanding one’s body, channelizing your energy, learning about your mind and soul and dumping all of that hatred for others.

Patanjali is considered as the father of Yoga as he was the first to systemize and codify the existing practices for which he introduced eight stages which one must master to achieve the mental stillness. They are,

Yama (ethical disciplines),
Niyama (rules of conduct),
Asana (postures),
Pranayama (restraint or expansion of the breath),
Pratyahara(withdrawal of the senses),
Dharana (concentration),
Dhyana (meditation) and
Samadhi (absorption)

At Turnstone Global, we are into the idea of taking Yoga as a unique mode of teaching and relaxation. At our non-formals schools in Basanti colony and at ‘Bachpan’ our children’s home in Barrackpore, we try to teach and provide relaxation to our children through the mode of yoga. Yoga increases one’s concentration power, focus, self-discipline, self-awareness and self-confidence. It expands the imaginative universe which is very important in a child’s life, helps in the body structure developments of children in a proper way which is very significant for a long and healthy life.

This Yoga Day, let us start understanding our body, our mind and our soul and its strength and its weakness and honouring each one of them. Because when we do that, we would have access to a knowledge which one cannot even begin to imagine.
