Get tested and fight AIDS!!

HIV / AIDS remain a persistent problem for the India and other countries around the world. While great progress has been made in preventing and treating HIV, there is still much to do.

The HIV murrain in India is driven by the heterosexual sex. The epidemic is concentrated mainly in the populations such as sex workers. This epidemic is affected the different parts of our country. The five states with the highest position in this epidemic such as Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are in the south or east of the country. Some states in the north and northeast of the country have also indicated rising HIV prevalence.

HIV/AIDS is a challenge for all of us, one that we can overcome by working together. Since it is not curable but prevention of HIV infection remains in a critical stage. Government and the society take many prevention strategies to promote the public awareness. At first, we need to gather proper knowledge about the sex education.  Since now, ‘Sex’ is a sensitive subject and public discussion on sexual matters is considered as a taboo in our society. Due to increasing incidences of HIV/AIDS, and unwanted teenage pregnancies, there is an urgent need to impart sex education. The government also has an expanding program to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV through their escalated efforts.

According to guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we all should have been tested for HIV at least once in our lives. The National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) includes, as one of its key priorities, widespread HIV testing to help increase the number of people living with HIV who know their serostatus, improve their health, and reduce new HIV infections. The NHAS sets a target for increasing the percentage of people living with HIV who know their status to at least 90% by 2020. If anyone is living with HIV, knowledge of your serostatus is vital for accessing and receiving the medical care and support services to stay healthy and live a long life.

Besides of the efforts of our Government, and other voluntary organizations, HIV is still considered to be a ‘social curse’ in our country.

We Turnstone Global also work for educating and promoting the HIV awareness among the masses in a different manner. We initiate the awareness campaign with the targeted groups such as high school students, their guardians, truck drivers associations, sex workers and so on. Our awareness campaign took place in the districts of Siliguri, Birbhum, and Purulia in West Bengal. Our programs were designed such ways by organizing seminars, discussions, debates, slideshow presentation, stage acting, street shows, film shows etc. our health workers visit and follow up them in weekly basis and also maintain and prevent further unprotected exposure. Our vision is to eradicate HIV from the three districts of Siliguri, Birbhum, and Purulia in West Bengal. In future, we also provide the best care (medical, psychological, emotional) to the victims of AIDS in these areas.

The growing population, changing life styles and increasing incidences of HIV/AIDS is a great challenge. In order to prepare our society to face and fight against this epidemic, proper sex education and innovative awareness programs are essential.
