Education for all

Education is self-empowerment.Receiving a good education helps empower you, thus making you strong enough to look after yourself in any given situation. It keeps you aware of your given surrounding as well as the rules and regulations of the society you’re living in. It’s only through knowledge that you can be able to question authority for its negligence or discrepancies. It is only then that you can avail your rights as a citizen and seek improvement in the structural functioning of governance and economy. It’s only when a citizen is aware about the policies of its government can he be able to support or protest the change. As a whole, people can bring about development only when they know where improvement is necessary for the greater good of mankind. Education helps you understand yourself better, it helps you realize your potential and qualities as a human being. It helps you to tap into latent talent, so that you may be able to sharpen your skills.

Education ForAll (EFA) is a global movement led by UNESCO (United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), aiming to meet the learning needs of all children, youth and adults by 2015. UNESCO has been mandated to lead the movement and coordinate the international efforts to reach Education for All. Governments, development agencies, civil society, non-government organizations and the media are but some of the partners working toward reaching these goals. The EFA goals also contribute to the global pursuit of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), especially MDG 2 on universal primary education and MDG 3 on gender equality in education, by 2015.The Fast Track Initiative was set up to implement the EFA movement, aiming at “accelerating progress towards quality universal primary education”.

One of the most powerful tools for the social and economic progress of a country is quality education. It brings with it equality among people. While privileged children receive international quality education, most underprivileged kids are provided with education only on paper. The aim hence, for imparting education should not only be on the numbers of children educated, but also the quality of education imparted.

“Abhilasha” is Turnstone Global’s non formal education program started in 2013 to support kids who are out of school in the slums of Kolkata.Started with 35 students in one slum of Basanti Colony; presently we have 394 students in our role. Abhilasha also takes care of their nutrition needs [distribution of tiffin daily] and health requirements including menstrual health of adolescent girl.No fees of any structure is being charged from them.

Another initiative of our NGO, they started an English Medium School at Belabahal village of Hura block in Purulia to promote modern education and to bridge the education gap between urban and rural India.Teaching methodology in this school is quite unique. Children are taught in a scientific manner with the help of interactive books and toys as a mode of education. Our motto is learning while playing. Apart from bookish knowledge, Turnstone Global encourages them in sports, cultural activities, community work etc.
